We have noticed a few new eating spots opening up in the hidden suburb of Riverwood. The latest addition to Belmore Road is a brassy little cafe called the Little General Espresso Bar! You will find it located next door to the luxurious function centre Coca Dora. They are both run by The Navara group who also manage Le Montage, Oatlands House and Curzon Hall. We popped into the Little General for an early lunch one Sunday morning hoping for some high class cafe food!

We found Riverwood much quieter than it’s surrounding busier suburbs, perfect for  relaxing over a delicious cafe lunch. There were a few tables inside the espresso bar with more seating outside on the partly shaded tiled pavement. Either way, you could sit contently and watch the world go by.

We started with the Little General's signature coffee while we looked over the menu, trying to decide what to eat. It's always hard to decide when you want to try the lot! The staff were awesome and helped us out with a few recommendations.

Alice chose Nonna’s secret recipe lasagna while I ordered two items from the Little General’s insalata menu. While we waited for our lunch we had a sticky beak at all the  beautiful hand made desserts, pastries and cakes lined up on the bench near the coffee machine. There is very little outsourcing here, the majority of their menu is made fresh in house, including all the tempting pastries.

When our food arrived it looked generous and was beautifully plated. I spent some time gazing at the oozing layers in the lasagna before I let Alice pick up her knife and folk.

My two gorgeous salads were a basil and rocket pesto pasta, and roasted kumara with beetroot. The pasta salad was made with tender organic chicken breast combined with pretty pasta bows in a creamy pesto, topped off with cherry tomatoes and parmesan. The beetroot salad was a sweet combo of baby beetroot, roasted kumara, fetta, chick peas and crunchy walnuts. These salads are also available as a take away, what a great idea!

The Little General is a classy addition to the emerging food scene in Riverwood. We were impressed by the thoughtful presentation and quality of their food, especially given the menu prices. Keep your eye on this area, we don’t think it will be quiet for long!
