It's that time if the year when food festivals are happening all over Sydney.  It kicked off just over a week ago with the biggest food festival of them all, The Good Food and Wine Show, which takes place each year in Western Sydney! It was held close by at the showground in Olympic Park. The showground is the perfect location because this event is huge. There's over 200 food and wine exhibitors, a line up of celebrity chefs, food and wine masterclasses and thousands of visitors who attend each year.

We turned up well before opening time to join the long queue of eager foodies waiting for show to start. Thankfully, once the doors were open the queue moved pretty fast, within minutes we were sniffing truffles, nibbling cheese and forgiving ourselves for being tempted into some early morning wine tastings. We wandered between the various displays discovering exotic spirits, fine wine, giant salamis, glittering fruit and loads of new cooking ideas.

The celebrity chefs add a little sparkle to the show, this years line up featured Kylie Kwong, Matt Moran, Sammy and Bella and the loveable Miguel Maestre. We attended a  cooking demonstration by one of our favourite local food hero’s, Kylie Kwong. Kylie showed the crowd how she makes a healthy vegetable san choy bau just like the one on her menu at Billy Kwong. Kylie’s unpretentious cooking style is inspiring to home cooks like us, she made the dish seem easy to recreate by sharing all her tips on chopping vegetables and suggesting alternative ingredients.

Speaking of celebrity chefs, season 2 MKR winners Sammy and Bella also cooked on stage, but between appearances they were busy running their twin pop up restaurants, Sammy’s Burgers and Bella’s Sausage Sizzle. We ate at Sammy’s burgers for lunch, I ordered Sammy’s polish burger just because I was curious how a polish burger would taste. The smoky burger patty was thick and juicy on a soft milk bun with a side of golden fries. The polish elements were sauerkraut and a delicious deep fried battered pickle which was skewered to the top of the bun. It’s a bit out of character for me to eat a burger but I found myself loving it. We popped into Bella’s Sausage Sizzle next door and bagged her trio of Saucy Sister condiments, my favourite so far is the extra spicy harissa relish, it packs a big heated flavour punch.

It was good to see some local faces among the nationwide exhibitors offering food and drinks from Western Sydney. We stumbled across The Australian Brewery from Rouse Hill and had a taste of the craft beer and ciders.  Razorback Ridge had a couple of new wines for us to try. Monte Fresco had a full display of continental cheeses including their signature ricotta. If you're a cheese lover, a visit to their cheese factory outlet in Wetherill Park is a  must! Bread pairs perfectly with cheese and Nonna’s bakehouse offered hot baked Italian bread fresh from the oven. My loaf was still warm we we finally got home. We also spotted our favourite Granville dip makers, Mon Jay Mezza.

No visit to the Good Food and Wine Show would be complete without stopping by The Wog With The Grog. It always feels like a party around these charismatic guys.   They specialise in Italian wines especially Limoncello, prosecco, moscato and grappa!

The good food and wine show was a long but fun day out. We always love to find those new food gems we have never tried before. This year we collected a whole swag of goodies to try out in our kitchens at home. Wine is a big drawcard to the show. I can't think of any other event which offers wine appreciation from not only all over Australia, but the world as well. I easily managed to buy seven bottles of wine this year, I found it hard to resist those Food and Wine  show specials!

We attended the Sydney Good Food and Wine Show as quests of the Good Food and Wine Show. Views expressed in this post remain our own.
