Last month was Ethan’s birthday. It was also my first study break since starting my degree via correspondence over a year ago. To celebrate, I promised Ethan a surprise weekend away. However, when it came time to searching for somewhere nice to stay, my hopes were shattered when I found that the average price for hotels around this time of year is $400 a night - way over my budget! After more searching, I finally found a place that ticked all the boxes – affordable, looked nice, not too far away and with fun places to visit nearby. It was the Atura Hotel at Blacktown. Yep, Blacktown. Happy Birthday Ethan, we’re off 25 minutes down the road to Blacktown.

I have to admit, my weird sense of humour thought it would be hilarious to surprise my other half with a night away in Blacktown. However, I also rather liked the idea of a ‘staycation’. It’s not often we get to relax and sight-see in our own area. And if you follow Atura Blacktown on Instagram, you’ll know that this is one cool hotel, so I really have been dying to visit it too. Atura Blacktown, neighbour to Wet ‘N Wild, has a playful, industrial look. From the pool area, to the restaurant, bar and rooms, this is a hotel that exudes style. There was a function going on in the pool area during our stay so we didn’t get a chance to swim, but we did spent a bit of time at the pool table near the bar.

And speaking of the bar, after enjoying our free arrival drink, I had to try one of the luscious looking cocktails. I had the creamy Toblerone cocktail, one of my favourites and this did not disappoint. For a late lunch, we shared a peri peri chicken pizza. Although it was nothing to write home about, it did take away our hunger. As a surprise birthday treat, the bubbly staff arranged Ethan and I complimentary shots of tequila and choccies. This was a lovely gesture, but it certainly did not help me with my terrible shot during our game of pool!

For dinner, we wandered up to the pub on the corner, the Royal Cricketers Arms. This very old drinking hole has a real colonial charm to it and some decent pub grub. I had the herb and parmesan crusted chicken snitzel with fresh coleslaw and crunchy chips, while Ethan had a good ole burger. After dinner, we went to the Skyline Drive-In which is also on the same street as the pub and the hotel. We picked up some treats from the Retro Diner and then watched Trolls from the comfort of our car. I hadn’t been to the drive in since I was a kid, so this was such a fun experience and at just $10 per person, we will definitely be returning sometime soon!

After a comfy sleep in our art adorned room, it was time for breakfast. Our stay included breakky at the hotel’s restaurant. It was a buffet with everything you could need. I opted for scrambled eggs, bacon, sausages, bacon, potato cakes, mushrooms, a waffle, fruit and a coffee. Needless to say, this kept me full for the rest of the day! My favourite thing on the plate was the mushrooms. They were thickly cut, buttery and sautéed with fresh thyme. I enjoyed them on a slice of buttered toast with some scrambled eggs. Yum! It was a delicious end to a lovely staycation in the heart of Western Sydney, Blacktown.

Sydney Food Blog if you were here in Melbourne just visiting, where would you likely stay? And please don't say Crown because people gamble, drink, do drugs and are violent there

Hi Katherine!

I recently stayed in Melbourne at the Brady Hotel. Not quite as funky as Atura, but still nice and really central to everything in the CBD. I would love to visit the St Kilda festival one day! I absolutely loved the Queen Victoria Market (both the regular day and the night market) when I was there in December! You Melbournites know good food!
