Chefs Gallery is a display of modern Chinese cuisine. Not just through the dishes placed on your table that you get to eat, but through the kitchen’s glass walls which offer a glimpse into the chefs’ domain. We peered inside these windows to see bamboo baskets stacked high over simmering pots and long ropes of dough being stretched, rolled and twisted into hundreds of perfect noodles all by hand. There are quite a few Chefs Gallery restaurants around Sydney. We visited the Bankstown restaurant for an authentic Chinese dinner (which means no Sweet & Sour Pork or Honey Chicken in sight).

The interior of the Bankstown restaurant is large but contemporary with dark wooden tables and a scattering of golden sculptures. The menu is as thick as a magazine, with each page detailing an enticing dish on offer.

We started with the Peking Duck Roti. These were similar to duck pancakes only better. A flaky roti holds the classic combination of tender Peking duck, fresh cucumber and a sweet but robust hoisin sauce.

Alongside the roti we had a bowl of Prawn and Pork Wontons. These are small in size but big on flavour in a soy based spicy Shanghainese sauce. The silky wonton wrappers are stuffed with a king sized prawn and tender piece of pork making every bite fulfilling.

After watching the skill of the talented noodle chef we just had to taste a noodle dish. We went with the Sichuan Beef Noodles which is a big bowl of steaming spinach noodles in spicy Sichuan soup with marbled beef, shimeji mushrooms, carrot sticks and spinach. This dish is quite spicy due to peppery Sichuan broth, however the heat is slightly tamed by oodles of slurpy, buttery noodles and the bright vegetables which fill the bowl. The heat and flavours of this fragrant soup definitely pack a punch.

After a spicy meal, the best way to cool your taste buds is with delicate desserts. The Panna Cotta is soft and creamy with contrasting textures of meringue and a sweet crisp sesame snap.

The most eye catching was The Garden. It is a layered dessert of cake, jelly, strawberry ice cream, custard and a crumbled chocolate biscuit soil. We couldn’t leave the Chefs Gallery without trying the hugely popular Steamed Custard Egg Buns. These are really cute and fun. They have been flooding our instagram feed for a while now so we had to get in on the action!
