Beer, schnitzel and pizza lovers of Western Sydney will be stoked to know that Penrith is now home to the Bavarian Bier Café and Fratelli Famous concept restaurant. What is this concept restaurant, you ask? Well, basically it’s the two restaurants under one roof. You can order Bavarian items from one end and Fratelli items from another end. Or, just head straight to the bar in the middle, which offers a menu with a range from both restaurants. We recently checked out this new venue and indulged in some big food and drink.

The Bavarian Bier Café and Fratelli Famous concept restaurant is located outside of Penrith Westfield, and spills onto the sidewalk. It was very busy on the Wednesday evening we visited, filled with excited locals keen to try out the newest dining spot.

To start off, we grabbed a cold beer to sip on. There are loads of Aussie craft beers on tap. We tried a couple, but really enjoyed the Butcher’s Bride Pale Ale as it’s quite light and fruity. If you’re not a beer drinker, there’s also a selection of wine, cocktails and some non-alcoholic house made peach iced tea available which is really refreshing.

If you were visiting the restaurant just for drinks and a bar snack, you can’t look past the Crispy Mac and Cheese Balls. A similar idea to arancini, but these are much lighter and cheesier. The soft and creamy mac and cheese centre is encompassed in a crispy, crumbed exterior, making it a really delicious mouthful.

Keeping it light, there are create your own salads and wraps available at the restaurant which looked great, but we were there to go hard or go home. The first of our mains was the BBQ Schnitzel from the Bavarian. A huge house crumbed pork schnitzel drizzled with BBQ sauce, bacon and jalapenos served with chips and coleslaw. This is certainly no ordinary schnitty as it’s got loads of flavour thanks to the toppings.

Also from the Bavarian, we had the Cheesy Kransky served with red cabbage and potato salad. The kransky is made from smoked beef and pork, as well as spicy paprika and swiss cheese. The cheese flavour is addictive and the texture of the kransky is spot on with a pleasing snap as you bite into it. It’s another generous serving with three kransky’s on the plate, fit for a big appetite or for sharing  around the table, if you can bear to part with a bite.

What really impressed us from the Bavarian’s menu was that all the sides really held their own. The braised red cabbage, coleslaw and potato salad were all full of flavour but light enough to compliment the heavier main star of each dish.

Over at Fratelli Famous, there is a pizza station where you get to choose all your toppings. The variety of toppings is huge so this was so much fun to order. Our ‘build your own’ pizza was: - A sourdough base with pesto sauce - Mozzarella (both regular & smoked) - Italian sausage - Pancetta - Chilli flakes - Sundried tomato - Roast capsicum - Green capsicum - Pepperincini - Fresh basil. It was an awesome combination (if we do say so ourselves) and we particularly loved the pesto base.

Even better, the pizzas take just 90 seconds to cook in the oven, making this a super quick dinner option. Some of the other mouth-watering pizza toppings available include meatballs in sugo sauce, gorgonzola, vegan cheese, fennel seeds, pine nuts, grilled eggplant and buffalo chicken, just to name a few.
