Wests Ashfield Leagues Club looks like any typical club from the outside but beyond it’s concrete facade lies a thriving indoor oasis. This oasis is The Garden, a farm to fork venue embellished with sunshine, lacy white trellis and lush green foliage. We spent a relaxed Sunday afternoon in these beautiful surrounds, sipping on Bellini's, nibbling on wood fired pizza and being awed by the ultimate dessert.

Our visit to The Garden wasn't just to enjoy a relaxing weekend lunch over good food and fruity cocktails, we were lucky enough to score a pizza masterclass with the Garden's Pizza expert, Joseph Aboud. Before lunch service began, Joseph stepped us through his method of making the ideal wood fired pizza.

The Garden has a sustainable approach to everything they put into their pizzas. They have even gone to the trouble of installing one of Sydney's only in-house flour mills. This means they are able to make fresh flour for every pizza they create. Joseph admits this may seem elaborate, but the results are worth it. The Garden's pizza bases are more nutritious and easier on the tummy than those made with regular processed flour.

Rolling pins are not required either as this soft handmade dough is easily shaped by hand and tossed in the air before its placed on a wooden board lightly dusted in semolina, ready for topping.

The toppings start with a robust house made tomato sauce, followed by house cured meats and a generous scattering of seasonal vegetables, olives, chillies and fresh herbs. The Garden embraces the use of fresh  produce, even the cheese is sourced from smaller Australian artisan producers. Speaking of cheese, how does a choice of goats cheese, ricotta, mozzarella and buffalo mozzarella sound? The variety if cheese adds different flavours and textures to each individual pizza. The smoky heat inside The Garden's wood fired oven takes less than two minutes to bake a pizza to perfection.

After our class we shared several of The Garden’s classic pizzas, sided with plates of colourful Autumn salads. We couldn’t try every pizza on offer but we loved:

The Aussie Prawn: house made tomato sauce, garlic, king prawns tomato and mozzarella. A nice gentle start before tackling the bolder flavours to come.

Potato and Goats Cheese: roast potatoes, garlic, goats cheese mozzarella, shallots and rosemary. This was our favourite! The goats cheese was warm, creamy and salty which is the perfect match for tender potatos and fragrant rosemary.

Peri Peri Chicken: A little spicier with tender rotisserie chicken, mushrooms, mozzarella, The Garden's own peri peri sauce and a few fiery jalapeños. This pizza caught everyones eye as it was carried to the table and it proved to be a real crowd pleaser.

Vegetarian Calzone: A folded pizza base filled with ricotta, roasted pumpkin walnuts, mozzarella and The Garden's tomato sauce. We loved this pizza pie's presentation, the sweetness of the pumpkin with the creamy ricotta and the crunch of the walnuts.

The salads are hearty and tasty enough be a meal on their own. The bold splash of colour which catches your eye on the The Garden Salad is a creative use of the salad's vibrant dressing. These salads are made with seasonal and unique foraged  ingredients with nutritional boosts like barley and haloumi cheese.

After so much goodness we could never feel guilty about indulging in a small dessert and on weekends The Garden serves up a real showstopper, the Chocolate Sphere. This is a perfect white chocolate sphere filled with seasonal fruit compote, chocolate mousse, mint sorbet and accompanied by a warm milk chocolate sauce.

The magic happens when the warm chocolate sauce is poured over white chocolate sphere which melts before your eyes revealing the fresh mint sorbet inside. You could not ask for a better finish to a meal than chocolate-melting-chocolate in such an impressive way.

The food at the Garden is a perfect match to it's beautiful lush decor. It's a great spot for families, we spotted a kids play room and theres also an adjoining cafe if you're looking for a coffee fix. Gather the friends and family theres something here for everyone.
