Castle Towers is best known as a great spot to indulge in retail therapy, but this shopper's paradise also offers over 60 places to eat and drink making it a great destination for food as well. The larger restaurants are located around a central water feature in The Piazza, an outdoor plaza totally dedicated to food. This is where Kinn Thai can be found, it’s a restaurant which serves Thai food with a fresh and modern twist.

 Kinn Thai

We visited Kinn on a regular Tuesday evening expecting a to find a quiet early in the week atmosphere, but instead we discovered just how popular this place is, especially with the locals,. By 7pm most tables inside the restaurant were taken and one of our neighbouring diners had even told us that he eats here 4 times a week!

As busy as it was, the buzz of activity was nicely subdued by dimmed lights and the soft glow of candles flickering along a wall over carved ornate Thai chairs. The cocktail menu looked enticing so we kicked off the evening with a couple of drinks. I had the Sweet Valentine’s mocktail, a light fresh fusion of watermelon and mint while Alice went with something a little stronger, but just as fruity and loaded with Pimms. Both drinks were very refreshing, and you have to admit, Tuesday night cocktails are always a good idea.

The menu teased us with so many beautiful looking dishes that we decided to not hold back on temptation, we ordered several items starting with the Spring Rolls. These little netted rolls are so crispy and are served with a ‘not too spicy’ chilli jam on the side. Spring Rolls are the perfect bite size and great for sharing around the table.

Betel Leaves are something we don’t see on the menu at our local our Thai eatery so this was our first taste of this exotic heart shaped leaf. The Betel leaf arrived topped with a fresh tiger prawn and a delicious combination of Thai flavours and textures. The menu suggested eating the leaf and prawn in one mouthful. We tasted mint, basil, coconut and peanut, just so much yum in a single bite.

One of my favourite Thai dishes is Papaya Salad, especially when it's served with Crispy Soft Shell Crab which we think is a match made in heaven. The Papaya Salad is fresh and zesty with nice kick of chilli. The flavours in the dressing are well balanced and not too heavy on the fish sauce which keeps this salad full of the freshness you expect from green paw paw, crisp beans and fresh tomato. A bite of this classic combo almost feels like you’re beachside in Koh Samui.

The Coconut Chicken Salad was one of our favs of the night, it's a bowl of tender shredded chicken breast, prawns, betel leaves, toasted coconut, fried shallot, cashews, Thai herbs, lime and lemongrass tossed in a creamy coconut milk dressing. It was soft, elegant and the definition of flavoursome!

Our first Main was a beautifully plated sticky marinated Orange Duck Plum Sauce. This goes well with a little steamed rice to soak up the rich sticky sweet marinade and delicate sliced duck breast.

Finally the Crispy Pork Knuckle. We initially wondered how this would be presented because we usually associate pork knuckle with big beer food! As a Thai dish it was just as impressive. The pork knuckle is served on a board surrounded with crisp lettuce leaves, fresh apple kimchi and two Thai sauces. The meat is fork tender and there's plenty of delicious crispy crackling to share. We took a clue from the lettuce leaves and pulled some tender pork away from the bone and enjoyed it san choy bow style. We complimented the pork with slices of the spicy apple kimchee, strips of crackle and drizzles of the sauces before biting into the crispy lettuce parcel.

For dessert we chose the Sticky Date Pudding which was lacking the usual butterscotch sauce making it more of a date pudding with chocolate and ice cream.

The Sticky Rice and Mango Sorbet was more our style with a big fresh mango flavour that took you straight to summer. It was a great finish to what ended up being a flavour filled Thai Banquet.
