The Macarthur region is well known for its many food gems, the latest one we have discovered is the Narellan Hotel. The bistro area, called The Pavilion, has a fresh and inviting feel. The menu offers classic pub grub like steak and schnitzel, as well some popular modern favourites like buttermilk fried chicken burgers and fish tacos. We called in for dinner and ordered some dishes which gave us the best of both worlds.

The Pavilion’s spacious dining area is casual but stylishly decked out in timber, greenery and woven cane. The seating branches into the outdoors with a long verandah overlooking “The Lawn”, where the hotel often hosts weekend entertainment.

We skipped the entree and went straight to the mains. First up, was the Slow Braised Lamb, a hearty dish with robust flavours. A generous portion of tender lamb shoulder is served with a rich jus, a creamy mash and a side of greens. The lamb is complimented nicely with the added texture of a pistachio crumb, and a fresh zingy salsa verde.

Chicken schnitty is always a classic pub favourite. We couldn’t pass up ordering one with a twist, the Hawaiian Schnitzel. This a big juicy schnitty is coated in golden crumbs and served loaded with a tomato sauce, ham, pineapple rings  and loads of stringy, melted mozarella cheese. On the side, crunchy golden chips and a fresh mixed salad make this a massive meal which would satisfy any schnitty craving. If you like the idea of a loaded schnitzel the other toppings available include pulled pork, nachos, swiss cheese with caramelised onions, classic parmigiana or you can enjoy it in a traditional herb crumb.

To drink, there’s of course plenty of beers, wines and soft drinks to choose from, but the cocktail list really caught our eye. Being a school night, we held back and only tried the Sticky Date Espresso Martini. This cocktail is delightful. The coffee flavour is bold and beautiful with just the right amount of sweetness from the sticky-date flavours. This is our kind of cocktail and we’d definitely come back on a Friday to try the other $10 martinis or some of the other cocktails like the Popcorn Colada and the Bounty-licious - yum!

For dessert, our sweet tooths were rejoicing even at the sight of the Mars Bar Calzone. This incredibly inventive final course dish was heavenly. Gooey mars bar inside a crisp dough shell, in a pool of white chocolate, served with vanilla ice-cream and some berries just to make you feel a little less guilty for devouring the whole thing completely on your own!

For something a little more classy and savoury, the Narellan Hotel also serves up Cheese Platters for dessert (or, whenever you’d want it really!). We enjoyed ours in the relaxing indoor dining area with a class of red, but could easily imagine sitting in the beautiful Narellan Hotel garden on a spring afternoon, with a chilled glass of rose. The cheese board with lavosh, three wedges of cheese and fresh and dried fruits is perfect for sharing. You can’t really ask for more!

The welcoming atmosphere at The Pavilion makes this a perfect spot to meet up with friends for a meal and social drinks, or a casual meal out with family.
