When it comes to pizza, western Sydney has a lot more to offer than the standard Hawaiian (though we do love a slice of the ole’ ham and pineapple). Many cuisines have also recreated the traditionally Italian fare with their own twists. Stay tuned as we share our favourite pizza places throughout the west.

The Italian Bistro at Birrong Sports Club is always busy with groups of local families and friends. With the option of eating in the laidback bar area or the table serviced bistro setting, it caters for everyone. The authentic pizzas are made in sight of diners, cooked in a wood fired oven and come out with a perfectly light but crispy base. This is what we ordered, over ate and will be back for:

Patate -  A unique version of a vegetarian pizza and quite delicate in flavour. It is on a white base with thin slices of potato which have been lightly crisped and simply flavoured with rosemary.

Meat Lovers - The boys favourite. A typical BBQ sauce base and loaded with spicy pepperoni, salami and cabanossi. Though not normally a huge fan, the thin, crispy base and generous amounts of salami make this one a winner.

Char chicken - The chargrilled chicken and sweet capsicum are flavoured with a sprinkling of Italian herbs. This one also gets the tick of approval.

Gambero - Generously topped with prawns, with just a faint hint of chilli. The garlic is not too overpowering either. This balanced pizza, like the rest, is made by the perfect base.

The Italian Bistro also do delicious pastas (I’m a huge fan of their Penne Gambero) amongst heaps of other mains. They also have a Sunday night raffle which we were lucky enough to win a prize in; ironically, it was a pizza board and cutter!
