The other night, my boyfriend, Ethan and I headed to Bankstown to see a movie at Hoyts for cheap Tuesday. We wanted a quick bite to eat beforehand that kept in line with the cheap theme, so we headed to My Canh Vietnamese restaurant on Greenfield Parade.

My Canh is quite a large restaurant, but it was completely empty while we were there. This didn’t deter us though as it was only 5.30pm and I had read so many great reviews about the place. We were warmly greeted, shown to our table and promptly given some tea to sip on while we flicked through the extensive menu of 228 items. The traditional menu had everything from soups, noodle and rice dishes to fish, pippies, lobster and eel.

To start, we ordered rice paper rolls filled with pork and prawns (minus the prawns due to the fussy, non-seafood eater) which were fresh and especially delicious dipped in the accompanying sauce. We also had the fried spring rolls, because I just couldn’t pick which one I wanted more. They were thin, crispy and delicate, filled with pork and vegetables. They were served with a vibrant fish sauce for dipping.

Next, I had a bowl of Pho. This rare beef noodle soup was just what you expect from any good serving of the Vietnamese favourite. It's a hot, flavoursome broth, full of noodles and thin slices of tender beef. Topped off with basil, bean sprouts and lemon, this is my ultimate comfort food and My Canh’s version didn’t let me down.

Ethan took on the more westernised version of Vietnamese food and ordered the sweet and sour pork and fried rice. The rice, which was quite sweet, had a combination of veggies, bacon and prawns. I selflessly picked out the prawns for Ethan (yum). The pork was cut into long, thin strips, battered and fried and served alongside long strips of celery and tomato and large pieces of pineapple. The whole lot was then of course covered in a sweet and sour sauce.

My Canh is a great spot for a casual, Vietnamese feast in the heart of Bankstown. I hope to go again sometime soon to try their pawpaw, prawn and pork salad and their BBQ pork.
