The sun was out on Sunday morning, so I pestered Ethan until he was forced to get out of bed and take me out for brunch. We went to Lachlan’s at Parramatta. Lachlan’s is set in the picturesque Parramatta Park, on the site of Old Government House. I absolutely adored this place from the moment I walked in as history and good food are two of my most favourite things.

Lachlan’s, named after Governor Lachlan Macquarie, is both a café and a restaurant. For casual dining there is the breakfast menu which includes a champagne list, high tea and a light lunch menu. Or there is the more formal Al A Carte menu. The breakfast menu offers a range of options to suit everyone.

Ethan opted for the traditional Hot English Breakfast with toast, sausage, bacon, friend eggs, tomato and mushrooms. The generous serving was lightly drizzled with balsamic vinegar and looked incredible. I ordered the grilled mushrooms and polenta with poached eggs and roast tomato relish. This was also drizzled with a sweet balsamic glaze and presented beautifully. The eggs were poached perfectly, which I was ecstatic about. The thick cut, sautéed mushrooms and polenta toast were the best I’ve ever eaten. Topped with the tomato chutney, this breakfast dish was just what I was hoping my Sunday brunch would be – hearty and delicious!

We sipped on yummy milkshakes with our meals.

After our fabulous breakky, we wanted to see the inside of Old Government House. For $10 each, we had our own private, guided tour. Our tour guide and National Trust volunteer, Barbara, was extremely knowledgeable of not just the history of Parramatta, but also early colonial Australian history in general. She showed us through the restored, furnished rooms of the house and filled us with loads of interesting facts about Governor and Lady Macquarie, as well as the other Governors that once occupied the house.
