Located just off bustling Church Street in Parramatta, but still in the thick of it, Kouzina Greco draws in diners with its charming, checker green table cloths and its cosy size. If you can’t tell by the name, it is a Greek restaurant and it is serving up all you would hope for on traditional terracotta crockery.

For dinner for two, we ordered cabbage rolls and filo triangles to start. The two plump cabbage rolls, which quickly arrived to our table, were filled with mince and rice with a delicate, dill sauce. They were surprisingly light but not surprisingly, delicious. The four hot and crispy filo triangles had a creamy spinach, ricotta and feta filling. Their flavour was complimented by the bed of rocket which they were served on.

We also had a Greek salad which we watched being freshly prepared at the salad bar on display. The generous amounts of olives, strong fetta and homemade olive oil dressing were lovely with the fresh components of tomato, cucumber, crispy lettuce and red onion. There was also an anchovy and pickled pepper on top, though neither of us were game enough to try them. The salad accompanied our shared main of slow cooked lamb shoulder on the bone with roasted garlic and potatoes in a rich lemon sauce. The moist lamb fell off the bone as expected and the sauce was delightful.

We couldn’t resist trying some Greek inspired desserts. We ordered the substantial servings (as desserts should be) of malt biscuit sandwich and baklava ice cream. The soft biscuits which formed the outer parts of the sandwich held together two thick layers of vanilla ice cream and a middle of marshmallows and chocolate honeycomb. Drizzled in chocolate sauce and served with a strawberry on top, this was a sweet-tooth’s delight. The ice cream baklava was just as good. Two large scoops of vanilla ice cream with walnut pieces throughout were sheltered between two large squares of crispy filo pastry. Drizzled with sticky honey and served with a small wheel of sweet walnut preserve known as karithaki, this dessert covered all the textural bases and was super yummy!

We had a lovely dinner at Parramatta’s Kouzina Greco. I hope to return soon with a couple of friends to try their Mezzedes platter.
