Lately there have been some new burger joints popping up across western Sydney. They are part of the ever expanding Dougie’s Grill franchise, but don’t think that this is your typical takeaway burger place. The burgers at Dougie’s Grill are all grilled to order, inspired by Middle Eastern flavours and all meat is hand slaughtered halal, filling several gaps in the burger market. Oh, and by the way, in 2012 they were put on the list of top 10 burgers in Sydney by the Daily Telepgraph!

For our first time visiting Dougie’s Grill, myself, Ethan and four of our mates went to our local Auburn store. We walked in and stared at the endless options on the menu before we were asked by staff member, ‘first time at Dougie’s?’ He recommended that I go for the classic Dougie’s Burger with chilli. I got the regular meal which came with chips and a can of drink, plus I also ordered a serving of Dougie’s special sauce and chicken ribs.

The burger had two grilled, juicy pieces of chicken, lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, mayonnaise and Dougie’s sauce. It was on a soft, untoasted, sesame seed bun. I’ve mentioned before that pork ribs are one of my favourite foods, but I had never had chicken ribs before this! The chicken ribs here are succulent, grilled and served in a sticky, sweet sauce. So good!

While most of us stuck to the recommendation of the Dougie’s burger, one of my mates went for the monstrous sized Portuguese chicken burger. It looked incredible. Another popular item on the menu, though none of us were game enough to try it, is the camel burger. Or, you could choose to go back to tradition with a mixed Middle Eastern platter of shish kebabs, garlic sauce, hummus, tabouli and falafel. There are also some more healthy options available such as grilled chicken and salad as well as wraps.

We were all pretty stuffed after our feast of saucy burgers, chips and ribs, but to our surprise, one of the lovely waiters brought out some complimentary ice cream for us because it was our first visit. ‘You’ll have to fight over who gets what flavour’, he told us. There was chocolate-hazelnut, vanilla, coconut, lemon and raspberry. Thankfully, we all ended up with the flavour we wanted. If you’ve still got room after your delicious meal, Dougie’s also sell sweets from Haberfield's Paticceria Papa.
