You don’t need to travel too far from western Sydney to enjoy a winery experience in the Macarthur region. We visited Razorback Ridge Winery at Menangle earlier in the year, when we heard they were holding a wine wise tour in November we didn’t waste any time in booking our place. This tour took us behind the scenes of the winery, showing us the wine making process every step of the way from the grape to the glass. Following the tour we enjoyed some wine tasting and a very nice lunch. My idea of a perfect day out.

Razor Back Ridge Winery is set in a quiet location with great views in all directions. On our arrival we were offered a coffee while we waited for the rest of the days attendees to arrive. This gave us time to appreciate the scenery.

The winewise tour started up among the vines with owner Richard informing us that the winery developed from a hobby that got out of hand! He talked about various types of grapes grown on the property then gave us an interesting history of the establishment of vineyards in Australia. The first vines were planted not long after the arrival of the first fleet. The first Australian commercial wines were produced by John Macarthur near Camden at the historical Belgenny Farm.

Back in the shed we were shown the process required to turn freshly picked grapes into the various types of wine made at Razorback Ridge. I was amazed to learn that a small team of two, Richard and his wife, managed all of the production except at grape picking time. The piece of equipment that surprised me the most was used for bottle labelling, I expected that to be a much more complicated process.

To wind up the tour we enjoyed a wine tasting class before lunch. The supplied aroma wheel guided us in picking the aromas and flavours found in each sample. Lunch of course, was delicious.

We didn’t go home empty handed bringing back a couple of our favourite bottles to enjoy over christmas. There is also a nice assortment of gourmet delights available complimenting the wine range. We purchased a jar of dukkah and preserved baby figs as gifts for some food minded friends.

Fussy Grape is not far at Oran Park. You could make a day of it and try both.
