I recently visited Bali with Ethan and his family to celebrate his mum, Cindy’s 50th birthday (and his birthday which falls on the same day). It was my first time visiting one of Australia’s favourite holiday spots and I must admit I was a little unsure of what to expect and in particular, what would the food be like? Well, I can tell you, I quickly fell in love with the Bali food scene. Here are some eateries you must visit on your next trip to Bali.

We stayed at Villa Amira in Legian, an amazing staffed, private villa. This is the way to holiday when in Bali. With chefs cooking breakfast for us every morning, we all definitely felt spoilt. Eggs, bacon, baked beans, mushrooms, tomato, toast, banana pancakes and croissants were on our daily rotating menu, giving us enough energy for exploring the surrounds until we found our next place to dine.

The Straw Hut in Seminyak is in a long laneway behind a strip of hotels. It was very quiet on the Monday night that we visited, but their social media pages show that it gets packed on a Friday night when they have a DJ and the restaurant turns into a night club. The outdoor fairy lights and pool give the restaurant a lovely ambience. The pork ribs, pulled pork pizza, prawn toast, burger and chicken schnitzel were enjoyed by all who tried them. To top it off, the Straw Hut has an awesome quote by Julia Child painted on a wall.

Potato Head Beach Club in Seminyak is a huge bar/restaurant/pool/night club located on the beach. A popular spot for Aussies, it’s essential to get their early to score a lounge on a nice day. With incredible service, view and atmosphere, this is where we chose to spend Cindy and Ethan’s birthdays. I had a simple steak sandwich and chips for lunch, but this was unlike any steak sandwich I had ever had before. The beef was cooked in thin strips then placed on a baguette with caramelised onion and mushrooms. Topped with aioli and this was the most delicious and tender steak sandwich I’ve ever had. The ribs, burger and chicken club sandwich all also received positive feedback, as did the cocktails!

Believe it all not, there was a third birthday on this trip. Helen’s birthday dinner was at Yogi’s Paradise and Grill in Legian where we tried a traditional Balinese meal of suckling pig. It was a fun night with owner Yogi providing lots of entertainment and insight into how the pigs are prepared. They were served with a plate of accompaniments including spicy rice, salads and crispy pig lung (yep, lung). While we almost all agreed that we would prefer to eat a home cooked pork roast with crackling and apple sauce, it was still a great Balinese experience.

Another restaurant in Seminyak that we loved so much we visited it twice, is Biku. Owned by an Australian woman who is a Balinese Princess by marriage, Biku’s food is fit for royalty. They specialise in homemade cakes and pastries. The chicken and leak pie was so good I ordered it on our second visit too. The starters we shared of potato skins and chicken lumpia (spring rolls) were so tasty, as were all the cocktails. Biku was almost everyone’s favourite restaurant of the trip. I would have loved to have tried their popular high tea. It will be first on my list of things to do the next time I’m in Bali.

My mum is totally going to disown me for this, but one night, a few of us wanted to have a quiet night in, so we ordered Macca’s delivery. We used the Indonesian McDonalds Delivery app to place our order and before we knew it, a scooter full of big macs, cheese burgers, fries and nuggets was at our villa. We all ran outside like kids at Christmas when the food had arrived, much to the amusement of the villa staff.

We finished our Bali holiday with a lovely dinner at Menega café. It is one of the many seafood restaurants on the beach in Jimbaran which grill fresh seafood over coconut BBQs. We sat at a table with our feet in the sand as the sun set over the horizon. We dined on red snapper, lobster, prawns and calamari while sipping on Bintangs and Mojitos. I also couldn’t resist buying a grilled corn on the cob from one of the vendors on the beach.
