You know when you go to an amazing restaurant and you just want to tell everyone you know and it is all you want to talk about for the next three weeks because it was the most amazing restaurant you have ever been to in your whole life, like ever?! Well, that’s how I feel about Mokoji Yakiniku BBQ in Newington.

Mokoji is reasonably well hidden but in a convenient location right near the small Newington shopping court. It was the ‘4 Pines on tap’ sign that originally caught our eye. Tapped craft beer in Newington? Who would’ve thought!

I’d never been to a Korean BBQ restaurant before (except for a blurry, 2am, post karaoke feed in Chinatown) so was a little unsure about how the whole BBQing-your-own-dinner thing works. Any uncertainty was quickly put at ease as we were greeted by friendly restaurant owner and manager, Justin, who talked us through the process. Justin spoke to us about his love of craft beer and his passion for premium cuts of meat. Justin gets his meat directly from the source, a farmer in Queensland that produces pure, premium wagyu beef. We were eager to try this, so we ordered a platter to share and cook on a charcoal BBQ that was brought to our table. Our platter not only included the beautifully marbled wagyu, but also prawns, pork belly, potato, onion, mushrooms, haloumi, chorizo as well as an array of unlimited condiments, plus a green salad. The wasabi wholegrain mustard was my favourite accompaniment.

We had a fantastic time sipping on our pale ales while cooking and eating our feast. The wagyu was the obvious stand out. It was so tender and melted in your mouth. It is the best piece of beef I have ever eaten…and I cooked it! But it is undoubtedly the superb quality beef that Justin has sourced that makes the experience what it is – incredible.

After a wonderful dinner, it was time for dessert, which was simple as our platter also came with banana and giant marshmallows. We grilled the banana and then our lovely waitress removed the grill plate from our BBQ so we could toast the marshmallows!

We had a fantastic meal a Mokoji. Topped off with outstanding service, a cool vibe in the covered, outdoor bar setting and a decent price on the bill; this is one restaurant that we will be regulars at.

It just sounds fabulous - the marshmallows sold it to me in the end! Is this a good spot to take kids to?

It's a great place for families, Silvia. Kids would have lots of fun having a go at BBQing and yes, the marshmallows are definitely a winner!
