We recently visited the Mount Annan Farmers Markets to pick up our weekly groceries. The markets are on every Sunday morning from 8am to 1pm during winter. They are quite small, but well worth a visit with a variety of friendly growers and producers selling the fruits of their labour.

We picked up some gorgeous, huge, fresh free range eggs from a farm Leppington. We enjoyed these throughout the week in baked in ham and egg cups, poached for our egg and bacon pasta and in a veggie packed omelette.

We were excited to see the Redgum Bakery at the markets. This lovely family recently moved up to Sydney from Melbourne and we’ve been following their move online, so it was fantastic to finally meet them and try their delicious bread. The sourdough options were endless – hand-shaped or tin-shaped, white or grain, poppy seeds or sesame seeds, just to name a few.  We went with tin-shaped, white, sesame seed which we sliced up and put in the freezer to keep fresh. It’s been great with our weekend brunches and as garlic bread with pasta.

They were also selling donuts (Mr 9 scoffed a yummy nutella one) and brioche! The brioche buns were soft and shiny. These were an essential component of our dinner that night of the best steak sandwiches ever. The other important ingredient (besides from scotch fillet steak), was Porters Produce barbeque sauce. If you’re a regular visitor of local farmers markets, you’ve most likely seen these guys around. They are delicious, homemade sauces that are really versatile and have won loads of medals. Definitely pick up a bottle next time you come across them.

Of course there were some fruit and veg stalls. A stall of fresh apples was also selling their apples that had been turned into condiments by the head chef of Parramatta’s Courtney’s Brasserie. Another stall sold wild mushrooms that we had never or heard of before as well as a selection of fruit that they had growing in their backyard.

There was also fresh biscuits, cakes and other baked goodies at the markets. There was a huge range of Anzac biscuits available – sugar free, gluten free, egg free – because ‘everyone should be able to enjoy Anzac biscuits’, Kate from Cupcake Glory told us. Too right. Plus, she also made beautiful strawberry and choc dipped strawberries which were works of art. We took some treats home for the family which they were very appreciative of.

After we finished our shopping, we popped into the Macarthur Centre For Sustainable Living. The centre itself isn’t open on weekends, but we took a walk through the gardens which were simply incredible. We said hello to Lulu the well-nourished pig then enjoyed naming all the fruit and vegetables that we could see growing in the gardens. It looks like a fantastic place for people of all ages to learn more about how to grow their own food. We wish this place was our backyard!
