When someone asks me for a suggestion on where they should go out to eat, the Western Sydney suburb of Plumpton, located near Mount Druitt has never come to mind. But that’s because I had never heard of the Alroy Tavern before. Now that I’ve visited, it’s high up on the Western Sydney Food Blog’s list of recommendations in this region of Sydney.

The Alroy Tavern does not look like your typical pub. It is estimated to have been built way back in 1888 as a home on a fruit farm. Over the many years since, it has experienced different owners and occupiers, was vacant for some time, suffered fire damage and then was eventually restored and transformed into a beautiful tavern retaining its colonial architectural features and charm. The Alroy still sits on a decent sized property. It has plenty of parking and a fenced off grass area with a playground, perfect for kids to run around while mum and dad watch on from the patio with a drink. A federation veranda encompasses the building offering plenty of outdoor seating.

Inside is impressive, too. The tavern has kept many of the interior walls, so there are lots of cosy areas to dine in. Adorning the walls are vintage pub signs as well as historic photos, including some fascinating criminal conviction records from the 1890s.

What also helps this pub stand out from the rest is of course the food! There are so many delicious sounding options on the menu such as Crispy Pork Belly, Tuscan Lamb Shank, Warm Haloumi Salad and Pea Arancini. We ended up ordering some irresistable cheesy garlic bread, the Aussie Schnitzel topped with bacon, grilled egg, BBQ sauce and cheese with a side of chips and salad, as well as the chef recommended Butter Chicken Pie from the specials board, also served with chips and salad. Both were huge servings and definitely sometimes foods, but they certainly were delicious! They were also items we hadn’t seen on any other menus before, hence why we ordered them.
