Eight weeks ago I didn’t know very much about sous-vide cooking. Most of us have only seen the technique on shows like Masterchef. The fancy Michelin star restaurant chefs have been doing it for years. Because of the size and high cost of equipment, sous vide has been out of reach for mainstream home cooks, but not anymore!  If you follow us on Instagram you may have seen all the sous-vide dinners I have been posting online. I have been cooking up a storm with a quirky little gadget called a Codlo.

Mr 10 and I have been avid viewers of the reality show, Restaurant Revolution on Channel Seven. We have always thought Sydney’s Restaurant Rev has the best team, go Dom! We are pretty excited that the Sydney Rev is close by in Parramatta, this weekend we were finally able to to check it out. It was interesting to compare dinner at Somewhere Nice to my previous meal at Scarfo in Melbourne, a few weeks ago.

Attention all golfers! Did you know Western Sydney has a beautiful big Greg Norman designed Golf Course just ten minutes north west of Blacktown? It's called Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club, and it's the home of the New South Wales Open. But wait there's more! The Chefs at Stonecutters Ridge have been finalists two years in row in the Club's NSW cooking competition, The Chefs Table. When we went to dinner at the club, we had high expectations!

The Sydney Good Food and Wine Show is the one event I look forward to each year like a kid waiting for Christmas. I was one of the first people through the door last Friday morning when the show opened at Olympic Park. With a good foodie friend beside me we spent the day exploring the offerings of this mega food event. We met some wonderful people behind the food and wine labels, excitingly we unearthed a few from Western Sydney!

Last weekend, we spent three amazing days in Melbourne.  While my husband and Mr 10 were keen to cheer on Real Madrid in the European soccer, I was excited to check out the Melbourne food scene. Even though we were only there for a short time, we discovered there's a lot to love about Melbourne!

We were recently interviewed by HotelClub for their blog post Where to stay in Sydney. Some other Sydneysiders (Laura of This Island Life, Sara of Belly Rumbles, Sarah of Love Swah, Silke of Happiness and Things and Lisa from Ella's List) were also interviewed for this blog post to discuss regions of Sydney they are experts in. We of course, talked about Western Sydney, in particular, Parramatta and Olympic Park.

Since moving out of home 6 months ago I’ve quickly come to realise how expensive groceries can be. You can duck down to the local supermarket to pick up a few things for dinner and easily end up spending $50. A great tip that mum has taught me is to look in the quick sale meat section at the supermarket to see what’s on sale. Quite often you can grab something that’s hugely discounted just because it is nearing the use by date. Recently I bought a 600g beef tenderloin for just $6, which was marked down from $16! Here’s what I did with it.

Every weekend during winter, a big pot of soup bubbles away on my stove. A good soup can be a one pot wonder. I always make sure there's enough in the pot for dinner, and a few workday lunches throughout the week.  The best soups are huge, hot and hearty. I like to make ours healthy with loads of fresh vegetables, a few herbs, plenty of garlic and some tummy filling protien. One of our favourites is a ham hock minestrone, this soup is so thick that even the men of the household are happy to eat it as a meal.

Last week, we were lucky enough to be invited to Oliver Brown to sample some items from their menu. We took Mr 10 along with us to fulfil every child’s dream of chocolate for dinner. We visited the Auburn café, but this Western Sydney based business also has a whopping 28 other cafes in Sydney so you are sure to find one near you and we suggest you visit it ASAP.

Jamie Oliver, aka the Western Sydney Food Blog’s Food God, has certainly done a lot in Western Sydney lately. There’s his Ministry of Food cooking school in Wetherill Park (the first in NSW), his appearance at the Sydney Royal Easter Show (where we had a huge fan girl moment) and last year he even spent a day in the Southern Highlands (not exactly western Sydney, but we’ll claim it). And it seems that he has heard our prayers, as most recently, he has opened up at restaurant in Western Sydney’s CBD, Parramatta.
